Hooks for TikTok Ads: How to Hold Viewers in the First 3 Seconds

On TikTok ads compete with entertainment, and the watch-or-scroll decision takes seconds. Eight hook types, ad structure and the metrics to test them by.

On TikTok your ad sits in the same feed as dances, memes and creators. If the first seconds do not grab attention, viewers scroll on — and you pay for an impression nobody saw. The hook, the first 1–3 seconds of a video, has the biggest impact on cost per result. That is why hook production is central to our TikTok Ads work.

In short: a hook must show within a second that the video is about the viewer's problem and make them want to see what comes next. Test several hooks on one video body and pick winners by retention and cost per conversion, not likes.

8 hook types that work

  1. Straight to the pain: "Bank rejected your account again?"
  2. Surprising fact: "We spent $0 on an office and opened an EU company."
  3. Result first: show the final screen, report or product in action.
  4. The mistake: "3 mistakes that make your ads burn budget."
  5. Before/after in the first frame.
  6. Calling out a segment: "If you run a clinic, watch this."
  7. Visual pattern break: an unusual angle, sharp movement, large on-screen text.
  8. Intriguing question: "Why does a $200 landing page outsell a $5,000 website?"

How to test hooks

  • Film one video body and 3–5 different hooks for it.
  • Run them in one ad group under equal conditions.
  • After a few days compare early retention, view-throughs and cost per target action.
  • Scale the winner and replace losers with new hypotheses.

Hook metrics

  • 2–3 second retention — the share of viewers who did not scroll immediately.
  • 6-second and full views — whether the body holds attention.
  • CTR and cost per conversion — whether attention turns into action.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need expensive production?

No. On TikTok native content shot on a phone often wins because it looks like a normal video in the feed. The idea and hook matter more than production budget.

How often should creatives be refreshed?

Creatives fatigue faster on TikTok than on other platforms. Plan a flow of new videos every week or two.

Does TikTok work for B2B?

Yes, if the product can be explained visually and briefly and the audience includes entrepreneurs and professionals. For search demand, Google Ads fits better.
