As an online business grows, a single payment gateway becomes a bottleneck. Every provider outage means sales stop, and every declined payment is a lost customer. Large merchants solved this long ago with several PSPs and routing. Here is how it works and when it pays off.
In short: multi-PSP means several providers plus rules for where each payment goes. It raises approval rates, lowers processing cost and protects against sales stopping — once your turnover makes the gain bigger than the integration cost.
Three mechanisms
- Failover. If the main provider is down, payments automatically go to the backup.
- Cascading. If a payment is declined for a "soft" reason, the system retries through another provider where permitted.
- Smart routing. Each payment goes straight to where approval is likelier or cost is lower — by card country, currency, card type or amount.
When you need it
| Situation | Multi-PSP needed? |
|---|---|
| Launch, turnover up to a few thousand per month | No, one reliable PSP is enough |
| Stable turnover, clients in several regions | Yes, at least a backup provider |
| High decline rate for cards from certain countries | Yes, with routing by BIN and country |
| Subscriptions and recurring charges | Yes, with retry logic |
How to implement it, step by step
- Collect data. Approval rates by country, card type and amount; decline reasons.
- Choose a second provider. It should cover the first one's weak spots: other regions, payment methods, acquiring banks.
- Choose the connection model. Your own routing layer or an orchestration platform with ready connectors.
- Set rules. Start simple: failover and routing by card country. Add complex rules based on data.
- Measure. Compare approvals and cost before and after; adjust rules monthly.
What to keep in mind
Retries cannot be endless: card schemes limit retries after a decline and penalise abuse. Cascading is configured only for eligible decline codes. Card data must be stored securely too — via provider tokenisation or a certified vault — so you do not take on the full scope of PCI DSS.
Frequently asked questions
How much can approval rates improve?
It depends on your starting point. If one provider handles cards from certain countries poorly, the gain can be several percentage points — a direct revenue increase.
Won't this complicate accounting?
Yes, payouts come from different providers. That is why reconciliation and unified reporting are set up together with routing, supported by analytics and API integrations.
Do I need a separate merchant account for each PSP?
Usually each provider runs its own onboarding. More in our article on merchant accounts.
