A rejected account application is one of the most frustrating moments for a young company: time is lost, no reason is given and the next application already starts on the back foot. Banks and EMIs rarely explain decisions, but over the years we see the same causes again and again. The good news: most can be fixed with preparation before you apply for a business account.
In short: within minutes the provider must understand who you are, how you earn, where the money comes from and where it goes. If even one of these answers is vague, the chance of rejection jumps.
Seven common reasons for rejection
- An unclear business model. "Consulting and IT services" with nothing concrete about product and clients.
- Complex ownership. Several layers of companies, nominee directors, trusts with no explained rationale.
- No proof of source of funds. The owner cannot show where the starting capital came from.
- A weak or empty website. Template copy, no contacts, policies or service descriptions.
- High-risk countries or industries. Clients or counterparties in jurisdictions the provider does not serve.
- Inconsistent data. Turnover in the form does not match the business plan; addresses do not match documents.
- The wrong provider. Applying to a bank that simply does not work with your profile.
What a strong application looks like
| Provider's question | Weak answer | Strong answer |
|---|---|---|
| What does the company do? | "IT services" | "CRM software for EU clinics, subscription from €300/month" |
| Who are the clients? | "International companies" | "Private clinics in Germany and Poland, 40 contracts" |
| Where does the money come from? | "Personal funds" | "Dividends from a previous company; statements and resolutions attached" |
| Expected turnover? | "About a million" | "€40–60k per month; inbound from the EU, outbound salaries and SaaS" |
What to do after a rejection
- Do not send the same application to the next bank — find the weak spot first.
- Ask whether you can reapply with additional documents.
- Choose a provider that actually serves your industry and countries.
- Disclose past rejections honestly if the form asks: concealment is discovered and damages trust more than the rejection itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does the bank have to explain a rejection?
Usually not. Banks and EMIs may keep reasons confidential, including because of AML rules.
Does a rejection at one bank affect others?
There is no shared rejection database, but many forms ask about previous rejections. What matters is understanding the reason and fixing it before the next application.
How many providers should I try in parallel?
Usually 2–3 that fit your profile. Mass-applying "to every bank" lowers the quality of each application and rarely speeds things up.
Been rejected or want to avoid it? Send a request on the business accounts page and we will review your profile, shortlist providers and prepare the pack. For complex structures we add KYB/KYC support, and a website that passes bank review is available under websites.
