Bank or EMI Business Account: What Should an International Company Choose?

A traditional bank or an EMI account: how they differ on fund protection, currencies, onboarding speed, limits and risk appetite — and how to build a resilient setup.

For an international company the account is not a formality but the circulatory system: client payments, salaries, taxes and contractor payouts all flow through it. Today the choice is almost always between a traditional bank and an EMI — a licensed electronic money institution offering IBAN accounts. Let's look at the differences so that opening a business account does not turn into months of back-and-forth.

In short: EMIs open faster and are more convenient for multi-currency online payments; banks offer deposit protection, credit and maximum counterparty trust. A resilient setup is a primary account plus a backup with another provider.

When to choose a bank

  • You need credit products, bank guarantees or deposits.
  • Large counterparties or public clients require a bank account.
  • The company has real presence in the bank's country: office, staff, turnover.

When to choose an EMI

  • You need to start receiving and sending payments quickly.
  • You work with many currencies and international counterparties.
  • The company is remote, with no office in the provider's country.

Why you need a backup account

Any provider can pause activity during a review — it is a normal part of compliance. With a single account, your business stops. We recommend a primary and a backup account with different providers, ideally of different types: a bank plus an EMI. The cost of a second account is nothing compared with a week of downtime.

What to prepare before applying

  1. Corporate documents and beneficial owner details.
  2. A clear business description: product, clients, countries, website.
  3. Expected turnover, currencies, counterparties, average payment size.
  4. Evidence of the owners' source of funds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account without visiting the country?

With an EMI, almost always. Many banks also onboard remotely, but usually only if the company has a link to the bank's country.

Is it safe to keep money with an EMI?

EMIs must keep client funds separate from their own — in safeguarded accounts or under insurance. That protects you if the provider fails, but it is not a deposit guarantee, so large balances are best spread out.

Do you guarantee the account will be opened?

No. The bank or EMI always decides. We match providers to your profile and prepare a pack that improves the chances of approval.
